KEVIN RATCLIFFE
Away (1990-92) versus Belgium European Championship Qualifier 1991
Welsh captain Kevin Ratcliffe's worn away shirt from the European Championship Qualifiying 1-1 draw against Belgium in Brussels on 27th March 1991. A very useful point gained in the Belgian capital, in a very exciting Qualifying campaign for Wales, which of course ended in the usual heartbreak, with defeat the Germany later in the year.
It has been laundered but shows signs of wear with marks of the field visiable on the shirt. The shirt was swapped with by Kevin with Marc De Gryse from whose collection the shirt originated, via a Belgian shirt collector, and where i was able to purchase the shirt. The senior Wales team only wore this style of away shirt on four occasions and this is the rarer long sleeve version. Kevin has kept or swapped the majority of his international shirts, -which you will be able to view on this web site in the near future- so finding one of his has proved to be quite difficult. What makes this even more pleasing is not just that i now have a Kevin Ratclife shirt in my own collection but also the fact that it is a style of shirt that i did not previously have.
So it has enabled me to get another step closer to owning a shirt from every player who has played over 50 times for Wales -the Gold Cap Holders- and my goal of sourcing an example of every style of shirt the Welsh first team has worn.
